Investment in Science A Historic Opportunity for Iran’s Development A Talk by Dr. Cumrun Vafa
“Montegrappa Sponsored the Investment in Science event. This event was organized to encourage private entities to invest in science and scientific research.
Cumrun Vafa is the Donner Professor of Science at Harvard University. He is one of the most respected
Physicists in the world. Professor Vafa is a renowned string theorist. String theory provides a framework
To unify everything we know about nature, including all particles and the forces between them, in a
Consistent quantum theory. His research is focused on the nature of quantum gravity and the relation
Between geometry and quantum field theories. Cumrun is best known in the string theory community
For his co-discovery, with Strominger, that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a black hole can be
Accounted for by solitonic states of superstring theory, and for expounding the relation between
Geometry and field theories that arise through string dualities (culminating in the Gopakumar-Vafa
Conjecture).
Cumrun Vafa is one of the most renowned Iranian scientists who is also immensely passionate for Iran
And its future. He believes Iran has a great potential to accelerate its development by investing in
Science. In his talk, Professor Vafa will share his illuminating thoughts on the essential role of science in
Development of Iran and our collective role in building a brighter future.
Cumrun Vafa was born in Tehran, Iran in 1960. He graduated from Alborz High School and went to the
US in 1977.
Major in physics and mathematics. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1985 under the
Supervision of Edward Witten.
